The TEACH Grant
A New Federal
Grant Available for 2008-2009 School Year
Beginning fall 2008 a new federal grant program, the
Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education
(TEACH) grant will be available for students who have an interest in
teaching. This grant provides up to $4000 per year to undergraduate,
post-baccalaureate and graduate students who intend to teach in
schools that serve students from low-income families. A unique
feature of this grant is that it will convert to a Federal Direct
Unsubsidized Stafford Loan if the Service Agreement conditions of
the grant are not met. The service obligation requires that the
student:
- Teach for
at least four academic years within eight calendar years after
completing the program for which they received the grant.
- Teach in
a “high-need” field (mathematics, science, special
education, foreign language, bilingual education, reading
specialist, or other “high-need” fields as designated by the
state).
- Teach in
a private or public elementary/secondary school that is
designated low-income.
