Student Work (Employment)
Programs at WSU

Work-Study Programs

  • Work-Study Programs enable students to help pay their expenses through part-time work.

  • Work-study eligibility is a financial aid award program.

    • Federal Work-Study may be awarded to any eligible student.

    • State Work-Study may only be awarded to eligible Washington State residents.

  • A student must receive a Work-Study award in order to participate in the program.

    • The award will indicate the maximum amount the student may earn during the award period.

    • This is an earn-as-you-go program.

    • Students typically work 10 to 15 hours per week to earn the amount of their eligibility.

  • Work-study eligibility is for the term award; it can't be carried over from a prior term.

  • Students are paid by check on a bi-monthly schedule based on the hours worked for the time period.

  • Students must find their own jobs; positions are not assigned.

  • Employment opportunities are posted on the Student Employment Center website (JobX).

  • Most students find jobs on campus but some do work off-campus.  See Off-Campus Work-Study Employment below.

How to Find a Job

  • Students are responsible for securing their own jobs.

  • Other possible resources when looking for a job (taken from the SHEO site):

    • "Community Service Learning Center"
Promotes and facilitates the involvement of WSU students in community service projects, including environmental restoration, tutoring, teen mentoring, service to seniors, and family advocacy. Volunteer and work study positions are available each semester. Contact 335-7708, Smith Gym 212, or http://cub.wsu.edu/cslc/

    • "Word of Mouth"
Many campus departments hire hourly/part-time workers whom they have heard about from other people; let people know you are looking for a job! Applicants may hear about job opportunities from other people as well. Follow up on any opportunities that interest you.

    • "Direct Contact"
Job applicants may go directly to a department where they are interested in working.
